🌸 Meng Po: Meeting the Lady of Forgetfulness 🌸

Welcome back to the circle. Even for those of us who have spent years studying folklore and mythology, the universe still has a way of surprising us. I recently drew an Oracle card for a deity I had never heard of before—an experience that is always exciting when you've spent so much time studying ancient tales. Her name is Meng Po, and her presence is as soothing as it is profound.

In the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology, Meng Po is known as the "Lady of Forgetfulness." She is seen as a kindly, gentle old woman who keeps a constant, patient watch at the Bridge of Forgetfulness, the very edge of the underworld. Her task is a sacred one. As souls prepare to cross over into reincarnation, she serves them a bowl of her "Five-Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness"—though in many stories, it is described more like a warm, herbal soup.

The legend says this brew wipes away all traces of the life lived before. It is a total reset, ensuring that when you are born again, you aren't haunted by the loves, the losses, or the bitter grudges of a previous existence. It’s a clean slate for the soul.

While her story is traditionally about the transition between lives, drawing her card made me realize that Meng Po doesn’t just wait for us at the end of a long journey. I think she can be drawn into our lives right here, in the middle of our current stories. We can sit with her and work with her even now, inviting her into our space to help us move on from memories that no longer serve us.

Her gift—the act of forgetting—is a profound kindness. Sitting with your painful experiences and it's lessons is indeed vital for growth. We need to feel to heal and process our emotions instead of stuffing them. But once that work is done, once you have truly sat with a memory and harvested its lessons, there comes a point where the lingering pain becomes a burden rather than a teacher.

This is where the wisdom of Meng Po enters. It is a form of discernment: knowing when to sit with the emotions that arise, and knowing when it is finally time to drink the soup. It is a mercy to be allowed to move forward without the constant, vibrating echo of old hurts. By working with her, we learn that forgetting isn't a failure or a weakness—it’s the grace that allows us to step into our next chapter with an open, unburdened spirit.

Today, take a moment to look at the shadows you are still carrying. Have you felt what you needed to feel? Have you learned what the pain came to teach you? If so, perhaps it is time to invite the Meng Po into your heart. She might be visiting you even now, holding a warm bowl and waiting for your permission.

Is it time for you to drink the soup and finally step across the bridge?
